St Birinus celebrates excellent GCSE results!

Posted on: 22/08/2019

Students at St Birinus School are celebrating a superb set of GCSE results, with boys at the school making fantastic progress and achieving a host of excellent grades.

The figure of 74% of students achieving at least a grade 4 (the equivalent of a C grade) in English and Maths is highly impressive within the context of boys’ achievement nationally. Equally, 53% of students gained at least a grade 5 in both English and Maths.

77% of boys achieved at least a grade 4 in English and 81% secured at least a grade 4 in Maths.  At Grade 5 and above, students did brilliantly with 59% successful in English and 64% in Maths. At the very top grades, 24% of all grades in English and 25% in Maths were 7 or above – performances the school is delighted with.

In addition, 64% of students achieved at least a grade 4 in English and Maths and three other subjects – the measure of 5 “good” passes – and 47% of students gained at least a grade 5 in English and Maths and three other subjects – the measure of 5 “strong” passes.

In summary, for the 129 students in the cohort:

  • 77% of students gained a grade 4 or above in English
  • 81% of students gained a grade 4 or above in Maths
  • 22% of students gained a grade 7, 8 or 9 in English
  • 26% of students gained a grade 7, 8 or 9 in Maths

Progress measures are extremely strong and demonstrate the progress made by all students within the year group. The average total attainment 8 grade is 48.5 – again well above the national average for boys in 2018 – and the average attainment 8 grade is 4.85.

We are also delighted with the results achieved by the early entry Year 10 GCSE Maths group who achieved a large number of top grades and should be very proud of their achievement.

St Birinus Headteacher, John Marston, said:

“We are delighted with these results. There are many students today who have achieved the very top grades and others who have fulfilled their potential or overcome significant challenges to achieve grades which they richly deserve. We are very proud of them all and wish them well for their futures, either studying at Didcot Sixth Form or elsewhere.  Teaching staff, support staff and Governors have all contributed to this success and I would like to thank them all for their hard work and dedication to our young people. We would also like to thank their parents and carers for their ongoing support of their sons and the school. These results are further confirmation of the strength of this school and the quality of the broad, all-round education which we provide for students of all abilities and backgrounds. I leave St Birinus knowing that the school is in a really strong position and will continue to go from strength to strength under Mr Manning’s leadership.”

William Manning, who takes over as Headteacher of St Birinus School from September, said:

“Once again, the boys have really done themselves proud and achieved a fantastic set of exam results this year. I congratulate all the students for their ambition, hard work and determination over the five-year period and wish them every success for the future, wherever the next step takes them. The burgeoning strength of the school community has really shone and I am hugely grateful to teaching and support staff for their expertise, inspiration and tireless effort to support the boys throughout their GCSE courses and for their immeasurable contribution to such a vibrant learning culture at St Birinus School.”
